Event Details

Instructor: José Domingez (aka Josmas Flores)

This is Part 2 of a 2 part hands-on workshop in which you will learn how to extend Open Wonderland by building modules that extend the Open Wonderland 3D virtual world toolkit.  In this workshop, you will learn the specifics of how to create a module. During the session, we will do a code walk-through of a sample module using an instance of NetBeans running inside the virtual world.

This workshop is limited to 6 participants. We will add additional sessions if more people wish to sign up. Also, the session will be canceled if fewer than 3 people are signed up one day prior to the workshop date.

The workshop is free ($0), but participants may optionally include a donation in any amount to the Open Wonderland Foundation by entering an amount in the payment field above. Funds raised will go to providing future training and educational actitivites for the Open Wonderland community.

Participants pre-requisites:

This session is intended for Java developers who want to develop their own Open Wonderland extensions or applications. Participants should have either attended Part 1: Basics of Open Wonderland Development or gone through the materials on their own and have an Open Wonderland environment set up and ready for development.

Familiarity with the environment is expected. You can log on to the Open Wonderland Community Meeting Server (http://owf1.virtualnorthstar.org:8080/) if you have never experience the environment before. This is location where the workshop will be held, so it's a good idea to connect in advance to make sure your audio is working.

You also need to be comfortable programming in Java and related tools such as ant and subversion. At least two years experience (commercial or as a student), and a working environment with Java SE 6, ant 1.7.1+, and subversion, are needed to comfortably follow the course (Linux/Mac/Windows).

Technical Requirements:

  • Modern computer or laptop (minimum 1.5Ghz+, 1GB RAM)
  • Game-quality graphics card with hardware-accelerated OpenGL drivers installed
  • Access to open internet (not behind restrictive firewall)
  • Headset (iPod-style earbuds are fine, but microphone headset is ideal)
  • Microphone (a microphone headset is ideal, but a build-in laptop mic will be fine)

Recommended Reading:

The following documents expose most of the contents of the session. Reading them in advance is highly recommended.
About the Instructor:

Josmas Flores is an avatar. He has been researching the use of virtual environments and gaming for education for the last 4 years, focusing on software development and computer science education.
In real life my name is José Domínguez, and I have been developing software for more than a decade. I am also a part time PhD student with Trinity College Dublin, in Ireland. After a couple of case studies based on platforms such as Second Life and Opensim, I discovered Open Wonderland and realised that it was exactly what I needed. Being written in Java, and being open source, allows for the creation of learning experiences set in real and authentic contexts, without limiting the study to a rather simplistic scripting language (as in the case of the previous platforms used) but opening the possibilities to whatever is in reach of a major language. Added to this, the scripting engine within the toolkit allows users to create content using many other languages such as Javascript or PHP, which can only enrich the experience.
